Concepción is a UNESCO City of Creative Music

The mayor of Concepción, Álvaro Ortiz, announced on Tuesday that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) ratified the Biobío capital to integrate it Creative Cities Network.

«We are proud to announce that our beloved city has been named as one of the 55 new members of the prestigious UNESCO Creative Cities Network,» indicates a statement from Concepción Musical, the platform that distributed the municipality’s application to the Internet.

The confirmation of this statement comes after the successful conclusion of the REC (Rock En Conce) festival – which brought together more than 150 thousand people in the city during the weekend – and was made public by the head of the municipality in a conversation with the president Gabriel Boric. , who has been on an official visit to the Líóbío area since yesterday Monday.

«Make it sound loud around Chile: Concepción has just been recognized by UNESCO as a creative city of music.» It is a pride to be today in this country that has given Chile and the world so many talents. Long live rock! Long live Conce!” wrote the president in his official statement on X regarding this announcement.

On June 20, in a civil moment, the Biobíó theater sent an official file to apply to the network. Acknowledging receipt by Unesco, The city will celebrate a new phase to celebrate the declaration on Tuesday, October 31, starting at 4:00 pm in Plaza Perú.

The Concepción Musical website explains that UNESCO’s Creative City is a city that defines creativity as a strategic element in sustainable urban development.

UNESCO Creative Cities Network It is a network of cities from various countries that have a common goal: to place creative and cultural industries at the center of their local development agenda, through active cooperation on the issue at the international level. There are seven creative fields that are distinguished: craft and popular art, digital art, filmmaking, design, gastronomy, literature and music.

There are 181 creative cities in 72 countries, 26 in the music area. Until today in Chile there were two cities that stood out in that category: Frutillar and Valparaíso.

Music has played a fundamental role in the history and development of this city of 230 thousand inhabitants. Its extensive scene has been the birthplace of outstanding artists of various genres such as Alejandra Urrutia, Claudia Acuña, Los Tres, Los Bunkers, Emociones Clandestinas, Santos Dumont, Niño Cohete, La Julia Smith, Dulce and Agraz, among other names.
