— Do not try to bend the spoon. This is impossible. Instead… just try to realize the truth.
– What truth?
– There is no time.
– Is there no spoon?
— Then you will see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only you.
This dialogue is from the movie «The Matrix» directed by the Wachowski sisters.
The main idea behind this exchange is the concept of reality and perception. «The sled» is used as a metaphor to illustrate the idea that the world, as it appears to us, may not be as real or fixed as we believe.
Spoon Boy points out that trying to bend the spoon is impossible because there is no spoon; it is an illusion, a construct of the matrix.
The idea is that the world, including physical things like the spoon, is not what it seems, and it is individual perception and understanding of reality that can be changed.
Real change happens in one’s mind, not in the outside world.
This dialogue reflects the overall theme of the film, which explores the nature of reality, control and human perception in a world dominated by machines and artificial structures.
Neo’s journey revolves around realizing and accepting this truth and his ability to control the matrix by understanding its deceptive nature.
Have you ever noticed how your best ideas almost always jump into your lap, almost effortlessly.
Sometimes we wake up with the answer to the problem that has been making our days hell for a long time. Out of nowhere, walking through the park, your mind delivers the solution you spent sleepless days thinking about. It looks like magic.
When we try to bend the spoon, that is, when we try to be creative, the answers never come.
The message of the film is very interesting.
It is a great illusion to try to create something. It’s not the spoon that bends, it’s you.
It is the sum of our experiences and ability to control our emotions.
In the Matrix universe, there are «agents» that terrorize everyone, and the only recourse when we encounter one is to desperately run for our lives.
They are the ultimate embodiment of fear.
Anyone who tried to deal with these entities died.
How many of your ideas died before they came to fruition?
How many times have you «run» because despair hit you and you didn’t believe you were capable of overcoming a situation or you felt like you shouldn’t be there?
When we «try» to be creative, we follow rules. The rules of a matrix that exists only because of these rules. This is a paradox where to be creative we need to know the rules in order to break them.
There is no trial: you do it or you don’t, said Master Yoda.
We all have «spoons» to bend and thus prove our worth.
Unfortunately, this is impossible.
You can only bend metal if you first melt your mind and form new ideas.
In the universe of creativity, we are free from rules. Physics is child’s play and our mind can do whatever it wants, even bend a spoon.
The fewer restrictions, the greater our creativity.
Agents will always exist and that’s a good thing. The fear they represent is pedagogical. They are the necessary counterbalance to telling us who we should not be, as they are the ultimate representatives of the core matrix.
In other words, they are governed by rigid, immutable rules, at least for them.
Without this perspective, we might be left wandering through reality, aimlessly.
When you face your biggest fear, remember:
— Don’t try to be creative. This is impossible. Instead… just try to realize the truth.
– What truth?
— There is no creativity.
— Is there no creativity?
— Then you will see that it is not the creative power that bends, it is only you yourself.
The greatest achievements are subject to the daily death of versions of yourself that no longer make sense, resurfacing with a new spirit, spitting in the face of fear, redesigning reality and, who knows, never having to dodge «bullets» again.
This is a daily battle! Should we try or do?
